Does a water filter soften water?
Most sediment and carbon filters do not remove calcium and magnesium. A conventional ion-exchange softener performs that job.
The softener’s job
Softening reduces measured hardness and helps with scale, spotting and soap behavior. It regenerates with brine and needs suitable drainage.
The filter’s job
Filtration targets a named particle, aesthetic issue or contaminant according to media and certified claims. Replacement or backwashing depends on load.
Where RO fits
Reverse osmosis is generally a point-of-use drinking-water process that reduces specified dissolved substances. It is neither a whole-home softener nor a generic sediment tank.
When systems are combined
Testing may support sediment removal before softening, carbon at a selected position, and RO at the kitchen. Order is part of the design.

Ask “what exactly does this model reduce, at what flow, for how long, and how is that claim verified?”
